Kalpana Chawla, born in 1962 in India, was an Indian-American astronaut and engineer. She made history as the first woman of Indian origin in space, serving as a mission specialist aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia in 1997. Chawla’s passion for space exploration and her contributions to the field inspired many around the world. Tragically, her second mission ended in disaster when the Columbia shuttle disintegrated during re-entry in 2003, claiming her life and the lives of her fellow crew members. Despite the tragedy, Chawla’s legacy endures as a symbol of courage, perseverance, and dedication to the pursuit of knowledge. She remains an inspirational figure, especially for women and individuals of Indian descent, continuing to inspire future generations to reach for the stars.
