Heinrich Hertz (1857–1894) was a German physicist who made significant contributions to the field of electromagnetism. He is best known for his experiments that proved the existence of electromagnetic waves, thus confirming a key prediction of James Clerk Maxwell’s theory of electromagnetism. In 1887, Hertz successfully produced and detected electromagnetic waves in the laboratory, demonstrating that they could be transmitted through space and could be reflected and refracted like light. These experiments laid the groundwork for the development of wireless communication technologies such as radio and paved the way for the work of later scientists like Guglielmo Marconi. Hertz’s discoveries also had a profound impact on physics, providing experimental evidence for Maxwell’s equations and advancing the understanding of the nature of light and electricity.
1. “I do not think that the radio waves I have discovered will have any practical application.”
— Heinrich Hertz
2. “One cannot escape the feeling that these mathematical formulas have an independent existence and an intelligence of their own, that they are wiser than we are, wiser even than their discoverers…”
— Heinrich Hertz
3. “I grow increasingly aware, and in more ways than expected that I am at the center of my own field; and whether it be folly or wisdom, it is a very pleasant feeling.”
— Heinrich Hertz
4. “Maxwell’s theory is Maxwell’s system of equations.”
— Heinrich Hertz
5. “From the outset Maxwell’s theory excelled all others in elegance and in the abundance of the relations between the various phenomena which it included.”
— Heinrich Hertz
6. “The rigour of science requires that we distinguish well the undraped figure of Nature itself from the gay-coloured vesture with which we clothe her at our pleasure.”
— Heinrich Hertz
